The 1,200m four-lane twin-tube Girsberg road tunnel on the A7 connection across the Rhine at Konstanz from Switzerland to Germany is a Swiss tunnelling project that has employed several techniques to tackle a challenging task. Logistically, geologically, and time-wise, the project is stretching the contracting joint venture to its full extent.
The tunnel is primarily an environmental protection project. At present, traffic leaves the end of the existing four-lane highway to pass through the streets of Konstanz to cross the Rhine bridge border into Germany.
