Screening for circulating IgA antiendomysial and antigliadin antibodies in epidemiologic studies of blood donors, for example, indicates that celiac disease is as common in the United States as it is in Europe, and its onset is not limited to the pediatric population. With a prevalence of roughly 1 in 250 people, celiac disease is one of the most common genetically based diseases.
