The W3C's XML Core Working Group has released a working draft of XML 1.1, an upgrade called the "Blueberry revision" whose primary purpose is to add support for recent Unicode upgrades to the core XML spec and fix issues of IBM mainframe compatibility with XML.
Blueberry's been a hotly debated topic among XML developers because, while the changes appear trivial, there's concern 1.1 won't be backward-compatible with XML 1.0. Some critics lambaste IBM for not changing its mainframe operating systems to work with the same conventions as other widely used operating systems.
One pundit suggested the new spec could turn XML into blueberry jam.
