Dec. 28--Two or three different systems may compete to sell flue-cured tobacco in South Carolina next year, experts predict.
Whichever method prevails could determine how much control growers have over the prices they earn on the market.
The systems competing for business in 2002 may include:
--Cooperatives. The farmer-owned Flue-Cured Tobacco Stabilization Cooperative is setting up 14 "marketing centers" in five states, including South Carolina, to let growers sell leaf at auction without having to pay traditional fees or commissions.
