Dec. 28--Occidental Petroleum said Thursday it will idle a chlor-alkali plant in Deer Park because of poor market conditions for the chemicals produced.
The process of shutting the plant and laying off 270 workers has already begun.
The plant, which has capacity to produce 410,000 tons of chlorine and 451,000 tons per year of caustic soda, will be restarted when market conditions warrant, the Los Angeles-based company said in a written statement.
