Sarah Susanka, the Minneapolis architect and author, designed a house for herself that had no formal dining room.
The lender from whom she and her husband were seeking a construction loan was wary of the idea because houses without formal dining rooms are not likely to do well at resale time.
But Susanka, for whom small houses are better houses, won out and got the loan. Perhaps she and her family go elsewhere for holiday meals.
