As Hilary Swank's first starring vehicle since winning the 1999 best actress Oscar, expectations are running high for "The Affair of the Necklace," and for her performance in it. But, by and large, they disappoint: neither comes through with much distinction.
The film looks terrific and definitely has some impressive moments as a costume drama. But director Charles Shyer ("Father of the Bride") fails to whip the production into anything very special, and Swank seems hopelessly miscast and weak at its center.
