The whispers started anew near the end of running back Charlie Garner's first season with the 49ers in 1999. Those whispers turned into a chorus by the end of his second and final season with the 49ers.
He is too small and slight to be an every-down back, some said. He is best used as a change-of-pace back and not durable enough to last an entire season as a primary back, others said. That's the same kind of talk Garner heard in his five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.
