As a general rule, foliage plants will tolerate a little less light than flowering houseplants.
At this time of the year you need good light for the latter, especially subjects like African violets which simply won't flower if there's insufficient light.
Most plants like to be within five to eight feet of a moderately light windowsill. Put them further inside the house just now and you're asking for trouble.
