THE traditional family unit of 2.4 children is a thing of the past, with women now having an average of only 1.9.

It is the first time since records began that the figure has fallen below two, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The children of the Sixties are the first generation failing to produce enough babies to replace people who die. The ONS report, Population Trends, says women born in 1955 had an average of 2.2 children, while those born in 1960 and who are approaching the end of their childbearing years, have had only 1.95 each.
