SAN JOSE, Calif. _ Violence on Bay Area streets claimed the lives of two police officers and a senator's son in 2001, raising the yearly toll of slayings in cities that still are safer than a decade ago.
San Jose logged 24 killings in 2001, up from 17 the year before but about the same as the total of 25 for 1999, which was the lowest of the 1990s.
"It's still very low _ the lowest in the Bay Area, as far as big cities are concerned," said San Jose police officer Joe Deras.
But remaining among the nation's safest big cities was little consolation to San Jose police who mourned the loss of officer Jeffrey Fontana, a 24-year-old rookie fatally ...
