KELLER, Texas _ Ed Roberts remembers when people were ashamed of their paint horses. The mixed colors were considered a sign of imperfect genes, and the horses were shuttled to the back pastures, out of sight.

But more than a quarter century after Roberts took control of the fledgling American Paint Horse Association, those owners gush with pride. Their animals are "unique" and "colorful," they say.

Paint horses have catapulted onto the equine scene in the past decade, winning titles in almost every event from trail riding to Olympic competition.

More than a half-million paint horses are registered worldwide.
