Buoyant--that was the general mood among ferry operators attending Marine Log Ferries 2001 in Orlando last month. Ferries are enjoying a much higher profile these days, thanks to the heroics displayed by New York City ferry operators and the marine industry on 9/11. Peter Johansen, the senior director of marine operations for NY Waterway, dramatically described to delegates how his crews battled "white out" conditions during the collapse of the WTC to evacuate thousands from Manhattan.
