November 26, 1970--Charles W. Gordone, playwright, director, actor and educator, became the first Black to win a Pulitzer Prize in drama for No Place to Be Somebody on this day. Gordone's play explored the dynamics of Black-White and Black-Black relationships through the story of a Black saloonkeeper who tries to outwit White mobsters. Gordone, a native of Cleveland, attended California State University, in L.A., New York University, the University of California and Columbia University. He also served in the U.S. Air Force.
