Which brings us to Michael Ryan, whose third collection, God Hunger, was so lavishly praised by Stanley Kunitz. Ryan strikes me as the very model of the workshop poet, in the pejorative sense. He comes with many laurels: His first book was nominated for a National Book Award; his second was selected for the National Poetry Series. This book is published by Viking, and its poems have appeared in such venues as Poetry, The New Yorker, The Nation and American Poetry Review, where Ryan is a regular contributor.
