The Americans are piling more and more pressure on the EU's Galileo satellite navigation system. A European Commission spokesman reports that the US Defence Secretary has sent a string of letters to EU Defence Ministers to warn them about the implications of the plan. The Americans are particularly concerned that in the event of a conflict or crisis, the United States would be powerless to stop enemy forces using certain Galileo applications. Nor are the Americans convinced about the purely civil nature of the European programme, although the Commission has given them endless assurances to this effect.
