SANTA CRUZ, Calif. _ Less than two months after the death of Roscoe, the Monterey Bay Aquarium's most widely photographed southern sea otter, a second otter in the popular exhibit has been euthanized.
Hailey, a sweet-tempered gray-and-white animal who arrived at the aquarium as a tiny pup in 1984, would have been 18 around the beginning of March.
The need to euthanize her was not unexpected. Museum officials said she suffered from osteoarthritis in her hips and an untreatable skin disorder in her front paws that made it difficult for her to eat or to groom herself.
