THEY were the 'flowers of Scotland' - thousands of young Highlanders whose fighting prowess was so great that Field Marshal Montgomery refused to go to war without them.
Montgomery led the men of the 51st Highland Division in their finest hour - the defeat of Rommel's troops at the Battle of El Alamein in 1942.
Almost two years earlier the division had been all but wiped out at St Valery in France. More than 1,000 Scottish soldiers were killed and more than 8,000 taken prisoner.
After El Alamein, Monty insisted the Highland regiments were used as his main assault troops in Italy and at the D-Day landings.
