WASHINGTON _ A special forces soldier was killed and a CIA officer was wounded by small arms fire during an ambush in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan on Friday, U.S. officials said.
"They were meeting with tribal leaders in the area," said a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity. "After they broke off from the meeting and departed, there was an ambush of some sort."
The Pentagon identified the soldier killed in the attack as Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Ross Chapman, 31, of San Antonio. He was the first American military member killed by hostile fire in the Afghanistan campaign, which began Oct. 7. The CIA officer was the agency's second ...
