THEY scramble into the treetops, dig into the earth or struggle in vain to stay ahead of the voracious flames.
But with 800,000 acres of bushland already destroyed, death has been inevitable for much of the weird and wonderful animal population of New South Wales this week.
Countless kangaroos, possums, koalas and lizards have perished in two national parks which have been razed as flames swept toward Sydney. And those animals which have been rescued are often so badly burnt that they have to be destroyed.
