For anyone over the age of 30, the parlous state of the Conservative Party must be a matter of constant mystification. It was, after all, only in the mid-Nineties that a Tory historian was able to entitle his book, The Conservative Century, with little fear of contradiction or much expectation that things would change in the century to follow.

Obviously, as they rang up election victory after election victory, people recognised that defeat one day would be inevitable, but more thoughtful Tories even welcomed that prospect.
