Fifty-three years after it was nearly cancelled, the Boeing B-52 has turned out, once again, to be a necessary weapon.
It did so acccompanied by the same chorus of complaints that has followed it since its birth. "America," bleated The Guardian on November 2, "is trapped in a B-52 mindset ... Huge earth-shaking explosions, horizons filled with flame and smoke ... these are the familiar, unnerving symptoms of a bankrupt policy, of plans lacking or gone awry."
