The Gatekeeper's Role In Managed Health Care
According to Webster, a gatekeeper is "one that tends or guards a gate" or is "a supervisor or monitor." The premise that a "gatekeeper" to the health care system is necessary for every patient is central to managed health care programs.
Managed care is the term used to describe a specific approach to the organization, financing and delivery of health care. The purpose of managed care is to develop cost-conscious, informed health care consumers who, through shared responsibility with plan sponsors and providers, can better manage health care costs and the distribution of available health care services.
