TUNISIA's approach to globalization was inspired by dramatic changes in the world economy at the end of the twentieth century: the end of the Cold War, which had governed international relations for nearly half a century; rapid technological progress, especially in information and communications; and the conclusion of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and creation of the World Trade Organization. The scope of these changes and the speed with which they occurred were unprecedented. ...According to Al-Sharq Al-Awsat Newspaper (December 7, 2008), a recently released report by the Council of Arab Economic Unity (CAEU) shows that Tunisia's GDP had witnessed an average 6.3% real growth rate in 2007 compared with 5.4% in 2006.
