Jan. 7--For the average American, the hangover from the Christmas credit card binge is just starting to throb.
According to a pre-Christmas poll by American Express, people planned to spend an average of more than $1,500 each on gifts, entertainment, travel, decorations, cards and other holiday expenses in late 2001. Much of that buying was expected to be on plastic, whose statements -- the ghost of Christmas immediately past -- are just starting to show up in mailboxes.
