Emily Higgins stood on her toes, stretched her neck and kissed a picture depicting the story of the birth of Jesus Christ.
"I've always known how to do it," the 8-year-old member of St. Mary's Russian Orthodox Church said Sunday during Orthodox Christmas Eve services at the church in DeWitt.
"When you go to the icon, you're praying to the saint," explained her sister, Anna Higgins, 16. "Lighting the candles is in honor of the icon."
The girls repeated the ancient tradition as they attended vespers with their mother, Susan Higgins, and sister Sophia, 10, all of DeWitt. The service was among a handful ...
