Former state Assemblyman Melvin N. Zimmer, who was one of the area's most powerful public officials before he suffered a stroke in 1989, died after he was struck by a car Friday night in Salina.

Zimmer, 63, was on Traister Drive about a mile from the Liverpool-area motel he has called home for the past three years when he stepped into the path of a white Chevrolet Cavalier, said state police Sgt. Charles Jones.
