Food manufacturers are liable to regulatory action by the FDA if a food contains an allergenic substance that is not declared on the label, FDA said in a new rule issued May 3 (66 Fed. Reg. 22,240). Allergic reactions frequently occur because allergenic substances in foods are not declared on the food label, according to Statement of Policy for Labeling and Preventing Cross-Contact of Common Food Allergens. FDA is directing districts to pay particular attention to situations where these substances are intentionally added to food and are not declared on the label.
