NEW YORK -- Even before the recent bankruptcy filing of heavyweight Burlington Industries and Malden Mills Industries' warning that it might follow suit, the outlook for the U.S. textile industry was a bleak one.
Yet many executives who have devoted their careers to the business believe there's still a way for the domestic mills to carry on, by focusing on specific product niches or joining forces with foreign suppliers. In a demonstration of that faith, some are stepping up and buying pieces of troubled companies, vowing to succeed where others had failed.
