SAN FRANCISCO-Even before they were faced with recession and war, Americans turned to drink. They've continued to boost sales of wine and the tools needed to open the bottles quickly.

Domestic sales of wine reached 565 million gallons in 2000, up 3 percent from 1999, according to the Wine Institute. The retail value of $19 billion increased 5 percent. That was the equivalent of 2.01 gallons of wine per person, a statistic that has moved steadily up over the past five years from 1.77 gallons in 1995.
