Asked what it was about Newfoundland that hooked E. Annie Proulx like a fisherman hooks a cod, the award-winning author found herself uncharacteristically at a loss for words. Or at least for an explanation.
``I have no idea, but something did,'' says the author of ``The Shipping News,'' now a movie directed by Lasse Hallstrom, currently in limited release but to be released wider Jan. 11.
``I got off the ferry and fell in love with the place,'' says Proulx. ``It was just like a lightning bolt struck me. I still can't explain why, and I still get that incredible rush every time I go back there.''
