Mention the name Mel Zimmer to the powerful politicians who served with him in Albany, and the Carrier Dome is often the first thing that comes to mind.
During Zimmer's more than 16 years in the Assembly, his success in winning millions of dollars in state money to help build Syracuse University's indoor arena was among his biggest achievements.
Zimmer also helped steer $15 million in state money to build the Oncenter in downtown Syracuse.
And he led the Assembly Democrats' fight to pass a key law raising the drinking age to 21.
But his colleagues also remembered Zimmer as a dedicated family ...
