Canadian Minister to Visit Libya

A Canadian government minister will pay a historic visit to the oil-rich North African state of Libya next week which could boost flagging trade ties and open the door to more investment by Canada's energy companies.

David Kilgour, Canada's secretary of state for Latin America and Africa, will be in Tripoli from Jan. 16-19 for the first visit to the country by a Canadian minister.

Ottawa imposed sanctions on Libya from 1986, lifting them only in 1999, when Tripoli handed over two suspects for trial on charges of bombing a Pan American flight over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 270 people.
