REPAIR works inside the 15km St Gotthard rail tunnel between Switzerland and Italy hampered the efforts of Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) to offer extra services in the aftermath of the fatal fire in the Gotthard road tunnel on October 24. Eleven people died in the tunnel following a head-on collision between two lorries. The road tunnel, which handles more than half the traffic crossing the Swiss Alps, is unlikely to reopen until next year.
