Fewer than one in five Dane County public school students are minorities, yet hiring a comparable proportion of minority teachers is a challenge, officials say.
Four percent of public school classroom teachers in the county last year were minorities, compared to a minority student population of 18.7 percent, according to figures kept by the state Department of Public Instruction.
School administrators say they want to hire more minorities but that the task is difficult. And it isn't likely to get easier.
