CASSINO, Italy - When Fiat S.p.A. opened its first assembly plant here in the 1960s, it dominated the surrounding farmland and employed thousands in a region that had suffered extensive joblessness in the years after World War II.
But as years passed, the way of making cars changed. Rather than financing large, vertically integrated complexes that made nearly every part of the car, automakers outsourced.
Supplier parks became the norm, and Cassino, with its in-house injection molding, blow molding, seat construction and metal stamping, was behind the times.
