2002 JAN 18 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Long-term intake of a diet high in retinol, a vitamin A compound, may promote the development of osteoporotic hip fractures in postmenopausal women, according to new research.
Diane Feskanich, ScD, of Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, and colleagues assessed the relationship between high vitamin A intake from foods and supplements and the risk of hip fracture among postmenopausal women. They analyzed data on 72,337 women, ages 34 to 77, in 11 states. The women were enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study and were followed for 18 years.
