While lung transplantation can prolong the lives of the sickest cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, it does not improve survival in most. In fact, a transplant may actually shorten the lives of some of these individuals, according to a study appearing in the December 5 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
For the sickest patients, an estimated 2% of all those with CF, the study findings provide "a little more hope" that they will have the opportunity to undergo lung transplantation, said lead author Theodore Liou, MD of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
