In the 1930s a British paleontologist named Sir Flinders Petrie discovered rudimentary bowling-related artifacts in the tomb of an Egyptian child buried in 5200 B.C. Not found, however, among the conical stone pins and stone balls were any unsightly, two-tone lace-up shoes, beer pitchers or snappy embroidered rayon bowling shirts. The ancient Egyptians were obviously missing out on most of the fun in a game of ninepins.
