Jan. 18--City wires continued to buzz with talk that next Wednesday's trading statement from Carphone Warehouse will disappoint. Persistent nervous selling of Britain's biggest mobile phone chain saw the shares close 8 pence down at 108 1/2 pence.

CW's founder and chairman Charles Dunstone warned back in November that Christmas sales of mobiles would be 40 percent below last year.

Dixons, which owns The Link mobile chain, has admitted that mobile phone sales over Christmas were poor.
