SILENT OLD FRIENDS greet Les Milton each week. A vintage conductor's coat and hat. Railroad lanterns. A station sign. They once held responsible positions, helping move passengers and freight in and out of Suffolk on the likes of the Seaboard and the Virginian railway lines.
Their glory days are gone now, but their stories are kept safe in the Suffolk Seaboard Passenger Station, built in 1885 off Main Street.
Since July, on Thursday afternoons and a weekend day a month, Milton has volunteered here, giving voice to railroading's golden past. He's one of about 35 volunteers who help make the place run.
