Allen Ginsberg's biography is an alternative history of recent America, or, if you like, a history of alternative America. It belongs only in part to Allen Ginsberg the man, and in large measure to Allen the Myth, who became a generic image that, in filigree, could be found within matter under LSD scrutiny. Allen was the alternative watermark on the alternative currency of the 1960s, a veritable lovable Lincoln. Being a myth means that you belong to everybody, and for a while, for two decades to be exact, Ginsberg did.
