Opponents of a law DeWitt passed last week to change its police chief's position envision a worst-case scenario that goes like this:
The new chief, who under the local law can be fired by the town board, will be forced to disagree with elected officials and risk getting axed or go along with them on a decision that may endanger DeWitt residents.
Other issues are involved in the town's decision to change the structure of its vacant chief's position, but that hypothetical dilemma is what could most affect the town's 24,000 residents.
