It is a tribute to the curatorial intelligence of Randy Rosen and Catherine Brawer that their exciting exhibition "Makin Their Mark: Women Artists Move into the Mainstream, 1970-85:' which has been given a suitably celebratory installation at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, should raise as many questions about the concept of the mainstream, and especially the historical structure of the mainstream in the period under survey, as it does about the artistic relevance of the eighty-seven artists' all being female.
