WASHINGTON -- Cloning to produce a human baby would be dangerous and should be outlawed for at least five years, a panel of scientists and ethicists concluded yesterday.
But the experts gathered by the National Academy of Sciences also said a legal ban on cloning should not apply to the creation of embryos used to produce stem cells for medical research.
"It's a serious matter for scientists to recommend any form of restriction on research and the reasons for it must be compelling," said Irving Weissman, a Stanford University biology professor who headed the panel. "In this case, we are convinced ...
