A team of scientists studying ancient corn varieties in a remote part of the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico have found genetically engineered corn despite the country's ban on bioengineered seeds. This sort of "contamination" has become a fact of life for corn growers anywhere near a field of genetically engineered seed, since corn spreads its pollen by wind (also see "Seeds of Discontent," page 8).
It has been illegal to grow transgenic corn in Mexico since 1998, when the government banned the production of genetically modified corn due to concerns about possible environmental and health impacts, including the possible contamination of the native seed ...
