When the Environmental Protection Agency sued the New York City Board of Education on August 22 for violating the Clean Air Act, a message was sent not only to school administrators, but to commercial real estate professionals as well. The message was clear: asbestos is a known cause of cancer, and violating laws concerning asbestos will mean prosecution. If found guilty, the defendants could face maximum fines of $25,000 per day for each violation.
