Jan. 21--The father of a teenager killed in an alcohol-related crash in 2000 wants the Knoxville Beer Board to expand its background checks for beer permit applicants beyond Knox County borders.
Because of legal and contractual restrictions, beer inspectors only check applicants' criminal histories in Knox County.
That means that an applicant who has been convicted of a disqualifying crime in another state or even an adjoining county could obtain a beer sale permit in Knoxville if he doesn't admit his criminal past.
