Jan. 24--Depressed oil and natural gas prices took their toll on profits for two oil industry bellwethers based in the Dallas area, but both were able to report some good news Wednesday at the end of a rough fourth quarter.
Exxon Mobil Corp. of Irving posted quarterly earnings of $2.88 billion, or 42 cents a share, excluding merger-related items. That marks about a 44 percent decline from fourth-quarter 2000 earnings of $5.1 billion, or 73 cents a share but tops analyst estimates of 39 cents a share.
