CLEVELAND -- In light of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.'s decision to stop sharing its scanner data with Information Resources, Inc. (IRI) and ACNielsen, the services are using their nationwide consumer panels to estimate the mass merchandiser's sales. Wal-Mart stopped supplying its information in August.
ACNielsen's Homescan service comprises 67,000 households in the U.S. and Canada, while IRI's Infoscan Advantage operation was recently expanded to 65,000 U.S. households. Both companies equip panel participants with scanners to record purchases by outlet and forward the data to the respective service.
